Period and terms

A Soviet autonomy was created in 1920 and became a union republic in 1936. Collectivisation and forced sedentarisation disrupted economic systems and were accompanied by mass famine.

Sources and change

Estimates of famine mortality and migration vary, but the scale of the demographic disaster is not disputed. Stalinist repression affected political figures, intellectuals and ordinary citizens.

Regional connections

Entire communities were deported to Kazakhstan from other parts of the USSR. Industrialisation, the Virgin Lands campaign and urbanisation changed the economy and settlement patterns.

Contested boundaries

Semipalatinsk testing and transformation of the Aral basin created long-term environmental and health consequences. Late-Soviet protests and political change in the 1980s form part of the prehistory of independence.

Chronology

  1. The Kirghiz ASSR was created within the RSFSR and later renamed the Kazak ASSR.
  2. Collectivisation and the livestock crisis escalated into mass famine.
  3. The first Soviet nuclear test was conducted at Semipalatinsk.
  4. The December events in Alma-Ata became an important episode of late-Soviet history.
